![]() ![]() Some of the most popular streamers remedy this by using two PCs at once - one for gaming and another for broadcasting. While Twitch's core system requirements are fairly forgiving, streaming and playing graphically intense games at the same time can put quite the strain on your computer. If you want to stream yourself cooking, playing music or simply hanging out (Twitch has a popular "IRL" (In Real Life) category full of people doing just that), you don't need any fancy gear - your phone will do just fine! The Twitch app for iOS and Android allow you to stream directly to the platform, which is a good way to do non-gaming streams or to test the waters before diving in. To minimize your temperatures peaking, we recommend closing any background apps while you're streaming. If you opt for a laptop, keep in mind that you may experience some issues with overheating since components are positioned much close to each other than they would be on a desktop PC. While we recommend streaming from a desktop if possible, going live from a laptop is absolutely doable, provided you have the specs necessary. If you're looking to stream PC games, you'll need a graphics card that's strong enough to support the streaming software and whatever game you're planning on playing. More important than your computer specs is your Internet connection, as you'll definitely want to stay connected via Ethernet for the best possible bitrate. The faster your Internet connection, the better, so you should probably aim to have an upload speed of at least 3Mbits per second, which should be quite achievable on most home Internet connections. ![]() As far as technical specs go, Twitch recommends having at least an Intel Core i5-4670 processor (or its AMD equivalent), 8GB of RAM and Windows 7 or newer - don't worry, you can stream from a Mac, too. It varies from app to app whether you can broadcast and chat, or just browse and view.Although there are a few exceptions we'll outline below, you'll likely be doing most of your streaming from a gaming laptop (check out our guide on the best gaming laptops out there) or a gaming desktop PC (if you're unsure, have a look at our best gaming PCs coverage). Twitch apps are also available for some gaming consoles. Twitch has apps for many devices including mobile apps for Android and iOS devices, through which you can browse and search channels, watch live-streams and participate in chat away from your computer. You can go to the site on your computer, gaming console or mobile devices via web browsers or dedicated Twitch apps. There are lots of ways to access Twitch and view its content. The videos are deleted after a few days to save space unless the owner marks a video as "Save Forever." If you are watching someone else's channel, you can even create a bookmark, which gives you a link to get back to whatever spot you bookmarked, provided the video is still saved. Twitch will only archive video of game broadcasts if the channel owner selects "Archive Broadcasts" in their settings. You can find live streams or archived videos. The site makes it easy to browse and search by channel or game title. Under "Settings," you can set your profile information, choose what displays when you aren't live, choose to have all of your broadcasts archived, set security and notification settings and view and control links to and from third-party sites and software, among other things. If your screen is small, the navigation links might appear as icons. From any of these pages you should see the left-hand navigation bar down the page, with links to a lot of the same things, plus "Following" (channels you are following) and "Subscriptions" (channels for which you've purchased subscriptions). All except the latter take you to some part of your account. ![]() Once you log in, you can click on your username at the top right-hand corner of the main page and choose "Channel," "Profile," "Dashboard," "Messages" or "Settings," or log out. This level of interaction between broadcasters and viewers, and viewers and other viewers, makes Twitch a more social experience than simply watching videos of someone play a game. You can also send private message to other users. ![]() Many broadcasters respond to chats out loud, and some may even participate in and live-stream matches with some of their viewers. You can see a running stream of people's messages and can even participate yourself. There's a navigation bar to the left, and a chat window to the right, unless you've expanded the video and obscured it. ![]()
